Water Conservation & Water Quality Protection & Improvement
Objective
Access to clean water is not guaranteed in all communities, and aging infrastructure has made fresh water resources vulnerable to contamination during extreme weather events, especially in historically underserved neighborhoods. In addition, lead contamination is a serious issue in communities of color and low income communties; changing temperatures and water qualities related to climate change can affect anti-erosive additives from decreasing lead leaching into drinking water.
Are you sustainably managing the natural resource of fresh water to protect the hydrosphere while meeting current and future demand?
Examples of Data Needed for Equitable Strategy Development (Qualitative and Quantitative)
- Do you know which areas in your community are at highest risk for lead and heavy metals in their water supply? Are you prioritizing infrastructure improvements in those areas?
- Are industries in your community complying with EPA standards for the safe storage and disposal of hazardous waste in order to prevent contamination during floods?
Responsible Local Agency or Department
- Public Works
- Water Utility
